18 days ago by April DeConick

I was just sent a link to the line up for the BAR festival in New Orleans. It looks like a great three days! BAR has created individual webpages for each speaker (here is the LINK to the webpage they created for me - I'm going to present my understanding of the Gospel of Judas and an antique magical ...

I haven't forgotten my blog

34 days ago by April DeConick

Really! The Codex Judas Papers has just arrived, and so I am buried in proofs and indexing...but the book (over 600 pages) will be out by year's end in Brill's Nag Hammadi and Manichaean Studies series.

The Good News Of Judas Iscariot

45 days ago by Calvin

I watched a program on the Gospel of Judas. In response to whether this noncanonical gospel is important, a priest/reverend responded with this (paraphrase): I can't imagine anyone wanting or needing more than Mark, Matthew, Luke and John. He made it seem preposterous that a noncanonical gospel woul ...

My response to Robert Eisenman and "Redemonizing Judas"

56 days ago by April DeConick

Robert Eisenman has updated and republished his Huffington Post piece on " Redemonizing Judas." I mention this not because I think it is a good article (things are quite mixed up in his article), but because again I am characterized by Eisenman as a "conservative" scholar who thinks the NT gospels a ...

'The Christ Conspiracy' in the Huffington Post My friend Dr. Robert Eisenman, a well-known Bible scholar, has just scored a major coup—albeit one that may not be immediately recognized—in his article for the Huffington Post entitled, "Redemonizing Judas: Gospel Fiction or Gospel Truth?" Posted using ...

Betrayer and Betrayed

Did Pontius Pilate say, “Oh no, we can’t have you loving one another, and we certainly don’t want you to love us, your enemies. To the cross with you”? The Lost Gospel of Judas Iscariot – Bart D. Ehrman This is my favourite quote from the book by Bart D. Ehrman. I imagined Ricky Gervais saying it in ...

The fallacious 'paradidomi'

76 days ago by April DeConick

Today I want to speak about the verb 'paradidomi' since there have been a number of discussions about this verb left in the comments of previous posts. What can and can't it tell us about Judas? I want to say up front that my reading of Judas and this verb has nothing whatsoever to do with the angst ...

The Gospel of Judas

Wikipedia: The Gospel of Judas is a Gnostic gospel purported to document conversations between the apostle Judas Iscariot and Jesus Christ. The document is not claimed to have been written by Judas himself, but rather by Gnostic followers of Jesus. It exists in an early fourth-century Coptic text, t ...

The Gospel of Judas in The New Yorker

103 days ago by April DeConick

This morning Jared on Antiquitopia brought our attention to and posted his thoughts on the August 3rd THE NEW YORKER article written by Joan Acocella, in which she argues that the push to heroify Judas by the National Geographic team of scholars and their supporters is part of a trend to counter fun ...

Distortions of Christian Life and Faith

103 days ago by handeil

There are so many distortions of our Christian life and faith that were around sometimes and even long time ago which can still be felt even today. I read lots of them. There was this Da Vinci Code which was very popular for sometimes in our present time and then just died down naturally, and [...]
